Standard route
"Slept" in my truck halfway along the road at 10,500'. Worked great for acclimating, not so great for sleeping. Started in the dark and was on the summit pretty early. Views much better than expected.

White Mtn Peak w Sally
The day after climbing Boundary Peak we did the long drive up and then hiked the peak. Cool very old trees in the area also.

All mine today
Didn’t expect snow (and plenty of it). Snow covered 100% starting 2 miles up (at the UC research facility). Windy too; wind stopped completely as I started down from the summit. Handled in trail runners; had spikes but didn’t need them. Fair bit of postholing, but overall great day. People seen hiking: 0, one coyote at 12k!

Hiking with the Girls
4th time doing White Mountain Peak. Another spectacular day, this time with Amy and Katie. First 14er for Amy!

Long Open Hike
The dirt road getting to the trailhead at Bancroft Gate is no joke! I blew a tire getting out. I highly recommend 4x4 and an SUV with high clearance. Definitely spend the night at the trailhead which is about 11,000' so you can acclimate. Freezing temperatures at night with warm sun without wind during the day. Pack layers. It will take about 7-8 hours to get to the top. There is no shade whatsoever and no water so pack smart. The final portion is pretty steep so lots of switch backs to make up for the grade.
5th time to climb this time with Sarah. Beautiful Day on top white puffy clouds not much wind.

Great weather, not very cold and I wore too many layers. Went with two others and we started at 7:15 am and got back at 5:00 pm

We were...blown away...by this hike
I'd never thought of White Mountain Peak as a particularly pretty mountain, but it proved me wrong on this hike along the usual route. Lovely rock colors and probably the most fearsome winds I've experienced outside of Mount Shasta, which also made the drive back to the Bay interesting.
Crux was the drive to the trailhead. If I climbed it again, I'd probably experiment with the western approach.

easy road walk
Took me five hours and ten minutes to get to the summit, but due to snow on the road I had to park my car a 75 minute walk from the TH. Cross country was sometimes better than staying on the road as it collected snow from a storm earlier in the month, but the switchbacks on the final push were almost entirely dry. Quite an imposing summit building.

Ueli and I
This was my dog Ueli’s longest day on a mountain. It was very Smokey. Trail was great. The research center creeps me out a tad.
The white mountains are a starkly stunning alien landscape. At the lower elevations, the bristlecones are something straight out of science fiction or legend. The hike starts somewhat steep as you ascend to the research station and then the observatory.
Once you get to the observatory the peak itself comes into full view in it's stunning red and black tones. The final ascent kicked my butt though, and I was moving pretty slow for a lot of the switchbacks.
I did this first try, solo, but I could not have done it if I had not arrived at the trailhead the previous day and camped. I absolutely love this mountain. There's nothing like it, even if it isn't the most challenging 14er.

I enjoyed this mountain even though it is a road walk. Nice views at the top!

Probably spent just as much time pushing my bike as I did riding it, but made it to the top and back down without crashing! Saw quite a few goats on the trail!

Nice hike, smoke was covering the valley, so the view was not great, oh well. Very windy the whole way up and down.

First 14er (and 13er)
Wonderful first major peak. Having done up to 12.2k I was super stoked to do 13 and 14 in this hike.
Weather was absolutely perfect, upper 50's with low end moderate winds (up to about 20 mph) at times. We got an early start (about 40 minutes pre-dawn) and were able to watch the sunrise after the Barcroft Research station up on the ridge.
Met some super cool people at the summit and on our way back down. Whitney is on the list now, but more conditioning and preparation plus an extra couple nights above 12k for that though.
This was more alpine and scenic than I expected. Also a nice break from the difficulties of most CA 14ers.

Barren landscap full of life
Beautiful hike to the top on a perfect summer day...landscape is barren and inhospitable per human standards, but full of life; saw many birds, moths, grasshoppers, spiders, flowers and plants, grumpy marmots, and the king of the mountains the CA bighorn.

Snow field easily bypassed
Long walk from the Barcroft Gate trailhead, up the southeast slope of the peak. No problems at all. There was a significant snow field covering the trail around 14,000' elevation but there is a steep use trail that easily bypassed the snow field. Great views on top. Started hiking at 6:45 AM, finished back at trailhead around 4 PM, we took our time along the way and spent at least 40 minutes on top. Great hike up, very enjoyable (but still a challenge)!
