Viewing the northwest ridge of Whittier peak from the west, you will see the cliff band which bars easy access to the ridge crest. This cliff is 50 feet high at the most and it tends to be loose and exposed. Note how much of the ridge crest is lined with scrub trees. View

The easiest place to access the ridge crest is at the far left (north) end of the trees. When traversing the basin from Longfellow Peak towards Whittier, aim for the point where the trees terminate.
