A desert holds many surprises. If you're
inside a wilderness away from roads, you
can still navigate by following a wash.
In most cases, they will lead you out. Or,
if your objective is to 'pack in' to a
specific landmark or peak, a wash is the
way to go. It will save you time and
energy. You can also find a fair amount of
shade during certain times of the day.
At some times there will be water; HOW much
water depends on the time of the year.
If you do see an approching storm, any wash
can be a death trap. A good topo will tell
you the location and intensity of washes,
and what direction they will take you. If
you follow the ways of the Desert, chances
are you'll reach your destination in a
timely manner, and always live to tell about
it. Don't forget to bring plenty of water!
