Been meaning to hike this peak for a long time. Nearly perfect weather and had the trail to myself. Closed campground adds maybe a half mile each way to the hike. Trail signage is easy to follow.

One of three peaks we did today (Will Thrall/Pleasantview Ridge/Pallett Mountain). Though the weather was starting to look threatening, we got down before the lightning and thunder started rolling through. Great hike!

Hiked from Buckhorn to Burkhart saddle and up to the peak. Pretty decent hike; it was actually a little rougher than expected. Great weather; nice and sunny with a nice breeze. Only saw one other guy that far into the wilderness. Sure enough it was another summitposter: Augie (Mountain Impulse). Had dinner at the Newcomb's Ranch afterwards; always the great reward!

From Buckhorn
Hiked up from Buckhorn to the saddle, tagged Pallett and then headed right back up to tag Will Thrall. After checking out the plaque placed by the Sierra Club, I headed over to Pleasant View Ridge. I stayed on the ridge line on the way back and topped out on Will Thrall again (ugh) and then almost stepped on a very angry rattlesnake on the way down - it must have been 2 feet away from me. Headed back down from the saddle and then back up to Buckhorn (ugh again). The cold hefeweizen at Newcomb's on the way down tasted heavenly. All in all, a great 3 peak day in the San Gabriels.

Seemed like a long way in. Went up to Will Thrall, then over to Pleasent View Ridge. The Burkhart trail needs some work, there's a number of downed trees across the trail.

Route Climbed: Along Pleasant View Ridge
Today, we first climbed Mt. Williamson and then took the Pleasant View Ridge to Pallet Mountain. Then dropped into Burkhardt Saddle and up to Will Thrall Peak. Finished off by continuing west on the ridge to Pleasant View Ridge Mountain itself (7,983' but not marked on my topo). To return, we went back to the saddle, down the Burkhardt Trail and then onto the PCT southeast to get back to the cars.

Route Climbed: Burkhart Trail from Buckhorn
Tried this one on 10-14-06 after a night of light rain. At 3 miles in came accross a stubborn lightning strike fire just off trail. Tried to put it out but it was too much so I retreated and advised the forestry service. Went again on 10-19 early a.m. and at the Little Creek crossing met up with a black bear grousing for food. Once the bear was aware of my presence it meandered back up the creek, so I continued on. Summit views were good and it was chilly with light Santa Ana Winds. Bagged Pleasant View Ridge and Pallet as well.
