What an adventure. Not having a door open to a cabin is something I can relate to. Once we ski/backpacked into a yurt and I tell ya, there were some tense moments when the door wouldn't open! Thankfully it was not the lock. What you accomplished out there was quite the feat. Too cool. So what's next.........complete Highline Trail mid winter?
Thanks, I can't imagine doing the Highline Trail in winter. I'm hoping to do some more trips from the cabin next year. With any luck, they'll be done with logging by then.

Freaky going alone. I know. I believe your choices were right-on - safety first and survivable.
A successful trip out beyond and back. Take care.
I believe in free will and accomplishing a task alone, but as far as survival goes, you could beat the burden of a heavy pack by leaving packaged food inside a hallowed-out tree stump.
It would be a personal cache, like the old trappers used to have.
Not that you'd develop a "false sense of security," but a food
cache would be wise in case of unforseen emergency.
You could also keep a bottle of Vodka in there, just in case ...
