Overview

Commodore Basin is a valley in Ouray County Colorado. It is a popular back country ski destination. This basin is easily accessed by a short skin up from Red Mountain Pass. The trail starts on the west side of the road, and typically after skinning up several hundred feet on south/south-east facing slopes, it drops down to the north/north-east and joins the Million Dollar Highway = Hwy 550 a couple of miles below Red Mountain Pass. You can either have 2 cars (one at each end), or hitch hike to the top of the pass. This run is easy to lap (I did two laps and did not leave my house till 11:30).

I would like to eventually create an area page for Red Mountain Pass skiing. Meanwhile will try to gather more information. I have skied several times McMillan Peak, Red Mountain, many times just stayed in the trees below. Anvil Mountain which is south of the Red Mountain Pass is a great ski tour too.
