Great VEST!!!! Best Gear Of 2012!This second edition overhaul is a great item on its own being slightly lighter but just as warm as the original. The market for synthetic insulated vest has really shrunk in the last few years so it is easy to say the Stratus Vest is a rare item.
Even Mammut has discontinued this very useful Stratus Vest during the 2012 year.
If you can, then do your best to get your hands on one of the last remaining Stratus Vest. You maybe able to find them on eBay or the European web stores.
PROS:
- Pertex Quantum shell is very durable and weatheproof. Much better than the poly weavings found on popular competitor brands. It also makes the vest wieght pretty much next to nothing.
-Tailored very well. Mammut items are usually already well tailored and fitted for the climber athlete but the Stratus Vest is superb example of well tailored. So there is no extra fabric or baggy-ness to it but the downside is big Americans that are used to the generously cut Arcteryx and Patagonia items will HAVE TO SIZE UP for the Stratus Vest.
-The Stratus Vest is very warm considering the thing weighs almost nothing. I took it out today on a windy 26 F degree hike and was very warm with a polyester base layer, the Mammut All Year Shirt, the Stratus vest and the Mammut Ultimate Advanced Windstopper over everything. The secret to the warmth is in the tailoring. It is designed to taper down at the hem so it hugs your body from the armpit holes to the hem trapping heat in against your torso. Also having 60 grams of MTI fill helps.
-Dries quickly. After machine washing the entire vest will completely air dry in less than 30 minutes when hung out to dry. Even when wet it is still very very very warm and usable. It is almost like magic.
-Little tweaks I like. The storm flaps folds away by itself when the zip is down. The entire vest fits into the chest pocket for stowaway. The collar cinch is pretty useful, cool looking, and easy to use. Pockets are true hand warmer pits with fleece lined material.
CONS:
-No large internal mesh pockets unlike the original Stratus vest. Not sure why they deleted them since not having them does not make the new vest that much lighter.
-Pockets are all smallish and could be bigger.
-Close fitted and not properly sized to be used as an outer layer UNLESS you size up from your normal size. Not really a con for many, like myself, but those buying this to wear over layers will not be happy.
-Color choices are mind-boggling. Mammut has this in Salsa and Chilli which are two similar types of 'red'. Then you have a choice of Dark Navy/Grey and Black/Grey which are two similar types of 'dark'. The effect of this is you have two color choices: red or dark. I would have liked a green or yellow or sky blue.
Below is myself in the Chilli colored, Size Medium Mammut Stratus Vest. NOTE: I'm 5'8" and 155lbs wearing it over a t-shirt and a long sleeve base layer.
