Southern California Canyoneering

It's not Zion, but there are scores of enjoyable canyoneering opportunities in southern California's San Gabriel Mountain range. The canyons are beautiful providing the full canyoneering experience of hiking, scrambling and rappelling. Some routes are fully bolted but the vast majority are done using natural anchors. Apart from safety, the only other cautionary note is the relative abundance of poison oak in these canyons.

The principal written source of information on canyoneering the San Gabriels is Cal Tech Professor Christopher Brennen's Adventure Hikes and Canyoneering in the San Gabriels.

Please add your own photos of canyoneering outings in the San Gabriels.

To date...

I've only done one canyon in San Gabriels, but I loved it. Nice idea for an album.

Re: To date...

Thanks cp. I'm always impressed with what we have in the little ole San Gabriels. You've got lots of great canyons ahead of you.
