Route Description
From the intersection of AZ 288 and Forest Road 487 at 5,403', start walking up Forest Road 487 as it travels through the scenic Workman Creek Canyon. There are
towering cliffs on either side of you. After 3.2 miles, you'll reach Workman Creek Falls. You can also drive to this point if you don't want to walk it. Forest Trail 151, which heads towards Aztec Peak, begins here. However, a fire occurred in this area in 2003, and the trail is now in poor condition. It's better to stay on the road.
Continue up the uneventful road towards Aztec Peak. You'll get a few fleeting views of
Aztec Peak through the trees every now and then. After two miles miles, you will reach a signed
road junction. Turn left, and climb the final mile up the
road to the
summit of Aztec Peak. There's a lookout tower on top.
Hiking Distance: About 14 miles round trip on the road.
Elevation Gain: About 2,400'.
