Started from Carvers Gap and walked the AT to the summit of Grassy Ridge. It was very windy and cold that day. After walking through frozen grass, trees, and clouds made the summit and took a few pictures.
The sun finally started to come out on the way down.
Route Climbed: AT from Carvers Gap Date Climbed: April 3, 2004
This hike would probably be relatively easy without snow. There is close to 1000 ft. of elevation gain on the way to Grassy Ridge Bald and about a 300 ft. gain on the return trip.
Our trip in early April was done in the midst of an early spring snowstorm. In some sections (primarily in the gaps) snowshoes would have been handy. Given the conditions on this particular day, one could have cross-country skied to the summit.
This hike offered dramatic views of the surrounding Roan Mts. It is a mountain that is no to be missed.
