A very long two day roundtrip drive from Milwaukee with only a couple of hours rest at Rest Stops; one each way. That's why I look so excited in the summit photo.

Hawkeye Point
We were on a trip from Pittsburgh to Denver and back to Pittsburgh and got several state high points. Got here just before sunset. Great spot!

Larvitour Stop #31
Having seen all the "flat" high points, I must say that this one is the most interesting. The high point itself wasn't much, but I got a kick out of all those signs showing the direction and distance to the rest of the high points. It really gets you thinking about the mind-boggling scale of this country. Mt. Rogers (my home state's) is 845 miles away, and some of the Western HPs were over 1000...

A long way for a flat spot
Drove through over five hours of Iowa to stand in a cornfield. It's a pretty spot and they do as good a job as possible with the displays and signs and camping and such (the restrooms are an outstanding touch), but it's still a cornfield. #25

Long Drive - Highly Decorative High Point
Easy to find right off the highway. Parked right next to the highpoint. The campground literally across the street looks to be fully operational with electric and showers. I love how decorated the high point was. It made myself feel better for the long drive to the middle of nowhere.

Really nice job they've done here...
They've really put a lot of money and work into this highpoint. Fantastic job. Well-maintained and really a treat.

Nicely Done!
Visited Hawkeye Point on our way back from vacation in Colorado. I wasn't expecting much, but the mile markers to all of the other state highpoints and the other attractions at Hawkeye Point were pretty neat. My daughter and I signed the register, made a donation and got an Iowa highpoint keychain also. A very well done flatland highpoint! I was glad we stopped.

After Charles mound before driving back to Minneapolis this was a long boring day of driving. It's a nice built up high point once there they make most of it. Surrounding area is middle farms and not close to anything.
What was nice is that you could grab an ear of corn while summiting.

Highpoint #8
What this highpoint lacks in height or height it makes up for in character. A nice marker has been placed at the site with multiple signposts pointing out the other 49 high points.

Highpoint # 23
WOW - of all the "drive-ups" we have seen so far, this is by far the most well thought out and attended - from the little barn museum to the signs pointing to all the other state highpoints - very nice! Windy and cold but we spent quite a bit of time wandering around looking at all the memorabilia.

Cold windy day
We parked in the driveway leaving ourselves a few feet of elevation gain to make the summit. We had a colder state high point summit on Rainier and also at least one of my Elbert climbs. But Hawkeye point will be remembered as a cold, windy November day. Climbing bear Snowball was blown around when he posed for his summit picture on the marker. After taking pictures we then headed over to near Clear Lake, IA and by headlamp visited the memorial at the crash site for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens & the Big Bopper.
These folks put a lot of pride and effort into making this place nice. Complete with souvenir key chains for a $1 donation. Very interesting stop. Camped at nearby Marble Beach State Park - Spirit Lake. Highly recommended. #43 for me, #30 for Lillian, #14 for John, #13 for Barb. Fun trip! Last of six for this road trip!

Great "summit" area, state HP #36
Second High point in the same day after driving from Illinois. However, the farm owners in Iowa really, really appreciate their state's HP, unlike Illinois. It was neat actually, from the poles with signs pointing towards all the other state HP's, to the observation deck, to the walkthrough barn. Loved this one!

...and also went over to the old pre-1970s version of the high point (Ocheyedan mound). The county and the highpointers club has really done a great job of adding some charm to Hawkeye point. Much more than I expected.
