Minuteman Tower, East Face

Minuteman Tower, East Face

Pitch 6 of East Face starts with a roof/flake pull. Nelson and Potterfield call this pitch 5.8.....that's one burly 5.8 if you ask me! Think the roof move deserves a 5.9 rating...then again, what do I know. Angle suggested by photo is accurate. This is granite though it doesn't look or feel like it. For a view of this roof/flake feature from below, see here. Also check out this outstanding photo of crux 2 pitches from cascadeclimbers.com (August 7, 2005).

I believe ya! So funny how I hear from guys now in their 50's and 60's telling how they used to sandbag ratings because it used to boost their ego. Only now have they begun to realize how much the sport of climbing has evolved and how they were wrong in pushing down the grades. Too bad there are people still chasing the number and still pulling that crap!

Kudos to you and Shirley!!

Cheers,

Dave

Re: Credit Given

Dave,

Thank you very much! I agree with you about the old school rating system (OSDS instead of YDS :).......I'm esp. weary of routes graded .9+ that were put up before 1980!!

Nelson and Potterfield guidebook has not been sandbagging most stuff we've tried there (in fact the opposite is true in many cases). In this case I got the impression the authors did the route long before they wrote up the description and some details got lost I think?

Then again, we saw a party of 3 ahead of us make this section look like 5.6 :)

Regards to you,

radek
