From Dragon/Gould ridgeHiked up to the ridge between Dragon and Gould and traversed to Gould. The final move to get up to the Dragon/Gould ridge was class 3. The ridge was at least class 3 and you can avoid the exposure by downclimbing a little bit out on the east side to get around it. The final summit block on Gould was really fun. I counted at least two ways to do it.

From kearsarge lake to Mt.GouldClimbed from Owens trailhead to Kearsarge Lake then to the pass between Dragon Peak and Gould. Then to the summit block. Found some oxygen bottles on the way. Descend via Kearsarge pass and the regular trail back.

In WinterMiguel Carmona and I skied the regular route one day after we skied the near-by Independence Peak. Either one of them can be done as a day trip.

Huge ThunderstormDate uncertain. Some members of my UCI Mountaineering Club drove to Independence in the Owens Valley on eastern escarpment of the Sierra Nevada to climb University Peak. From the Onion Valley Campground we hiked up the trail to Gilbert Lake, where we made camp. That afternoon we continued up to Kearsarge Pass and scrambled to the summit of Mt. Gould, before returning to spend the night at our camp. That night a huge thunderstorm raged the whole night, causing us to huddle under our ground cloths (we didn't bring tents) to avoid becoming soaked. The next mourning we were waisted from having no sleep and packed back to our cars and drove home. The ranger at the lake hiked out too as he had been flooded out of his tent.

From Kearsarge PassHiked up to Kearsarge Pass from Onion Valley, then headed due north up toward Gould's summit. Use trails made for a relatively simple ascent.

Socked InCloud ceiling was below 11,000', so visibility was down to about 20' near the summit. Still some ice and snow near the class 3 crack to the top, so had to find another way up from the north side. No views at all!

From Kearsarge PassDayhike up from Onion Valley. I found that the easiest way up the summit block was on the western side. There are 3 or 4 class 3 steps that lead up to the summit.

Airy Side of Summit BlockCan't say I enjoyed the scramble up the scree from Kearsarge Pass, but it became more fun when we got to the sparse 3d class section. Getting up the summit block on its exposed side takes some concentration. Only room enough for two butts on the top of the block.

Golden Trout L., Gould, Dragon L., Rae Lakes, Glen Pass, Kearsarge Pass, O.V. dayhike loopScouted scrambles to and from Golden Trout Lake and Gould's south, north, and east ridges with my six-year-old daughter a few days before from Onion Valley, returning via Kearsarge Pass with a twenty-something named Alex we met at GTL. Started from Onion Valley just before dawn one morning, headed up to GTL, up the slope west-southwest of GTL to the first false summit area of the normal Kearsarge Pass route, summitted Gould, and traversed toward Dragon. At the radio transmitter I discovered I had forgotten my food (for the first time ever)! Found the radio transmitter building's door to be half broken off with an MRE waiting for me! Continued down Gould Pass to the lakes above Dragon Lake, then down to Dragon Lake and Rae Lakes. Saw my first people of the day on the JMT, then tons more people. Flew up and down Glen Pass and then bonked slightly part way up Kearsarge Pass. Sped up again on the way down to Onion Valley where I enjoyed dinner, shower, and a long drive home from a great first trip to Onion Valley area and the part of SEKI reachable on dayhikes from there.

Acclimatization hikeFrom Onion Valley to Kearsarge Pass then right up the scree and talus to the summit. I intended this as an acclimatization hike for the higher hikes that followed. I started at 1:00PM which got me to the summit just in time for the daily thunderstorm! On the summit I couldn't see 10 meters ahead but I could hear the loud thunders. I run down to the trail fearing lightning.

Very fun scrambleWhat a blast climbing up from Kearsarge Pass to the summit block. If not for the rain, lightning and thunder probably would have continued along the ridge. Next time.
