Approach
Follow the approach for the
North Ridge through the Devastated Area starting at Emigrant Pass (6,446'). When you get to the clearing, instead of angling to climber's right to gain the ridge, just head across some gently sloping terrain to the base of the
obvious Northeast Face.
Before heading in from Emigrant Pass, take a compass reading as if you were heading out from the summit to the parking area. This will be useful on the hike out when you are going through the trees.
Total distance from trailhead to summit is 4 miles.
Route Description
Just
a basic snow face. The summit is visible for the entire route and the angle is mostly about 40°, approaching 45° for the
final few hundred feet. To avoid the steep snow, angle to the left or right and then hike up some rocks. The hiking variations near the top are class 2 if you angle to climber's right and probably class 3 to
climber's left.
This is an excellent ski descent. Earlier in the season, definately be aware of avalanche potential.
Essential Gear
- Boots and ski poles for the climb. Skis, snowboards, etc. for the descent.
- If it's icy, crampons and an ice axe will be useful.
- During the winter, be prepared for avalanches on this route.
