Quilotoa Crater Lake.
The famous volcanic-crater lake of Quilotoa is one of Ecuador's most staggering sights. From the precipitous crater rim there are stunning views of the mirror-green lake some 400 meters below, and the snowcapped peaks of Cotopaxi and Illiniza Sur can be seen towering in the distance.

It's a hair-raising train ride descent from Alausi to Sibambe, down a death-defying stretch of track.
The steep descent after Alausi is accomplished by a series of switchbacks down the steep mountainside.

Occasional rickety-looking bridges cross steep ravines, the train regularly derails, but this is part of the fun besides the ride on the train's roof.
