Solid rock?I'm unfamilar with that type of rock. Is it solid or can those large flakes break off?

Re: Solid rock?Janne, the sandstone can be loose. The most deceiving aspect of climbing these sort of routes is the "Desert Varnish". Mostly great tempting holds, but not bomber. It will come off on you.
It is made up of a coating of clay particles (approximately 70%) combined with mineral deposits of iron and manganese oxides - - all probably wind-blown material that settled on the surface of rock.

Fun TraverseNice pic. of traversing off the 1st pitch belay anchors! I did this route in my La Sportiva Exum Ridges a few years back and I was preparing for a big pendulum! Thanks for sharing Dow!
