From the Gap Road Access to Tremont Mountain, Thorodin Mountain, Starr Peak, and Sheepshead in Golden Gate Canyon State Park, head north-northwest up the initially gradual south slope of Thorodin Mountain. After about 0.2 miles you may run into an old four-wheel drive road. Optionally follow this road north-northeast for an additional 0.2 miles or just head due north. Don't follow the road for more than 0.2 miles because after than it turns to the east (which leads you in the wrong direction). Continue up the south slope of Thorodin Mountain for 0.6 miles to its summit. From the summit of Thorodin Mountain, descend to the northeast, skirting a 10,520 foot false summit of Thorodin Mountain to its east side. Continue heading northeast to the saddle between Starr Peak and Thorodin Mountain's northeastern false summit. From the saddle, ascend to the northeast to the summit of Starr Peak. From the summit of Starr Peak, head southeast to the rocky summit of Sheephead which is only 0.12 miles away. From Sheepshead, return the way that you came (optionally skirting the summit of Starr Peak). After skirting the northeast false summit of Thorodin Mountain, avoid re-summitting Thorodin Mountain by descending directly south, eventually reaching your original approach route and then the trailhead. |
