Re: Silvertip PeakIt's only supposed to be Class 2. You follow ridges to the summit cliffs and then find a break in them. The entire route is off-trail, though.

Re: Silvertip PeakIt's a good offtrail ramble from Avalanche, with no brush. What I did was traverse that broad face (which is not as steep as it looks) to the central ridge. There was a nice little break in the cliffs pretty near where that butts into the top cliff band. The NEXT peak down (right center in your photo) looked more challenging, but I didn't try it. It doesn't have a name.

Re: Silvertip PeakYou know, it's not far ... I don't have the maps handy, but I think it's only maybe 4 miles beyond Avalanche. The hard thing is traversing Avalanche going and coming, which adds a lot of up and down. As I recall you could avoid that by bushwhacking a mile or two from the East Entrance Road up to a low point on the ridge north of Avalanche. This was Rocky Mountain bushwhacking--nice, open forest, nothing to bother somebody like you that's used to North Carolina thickets. But if the area has been burned over, that could have changed.

Re: Silvertip PeakNext time I go I'm going to bag some more peaks in that area. Plus, I'm going to spend a LOT more time in Lamar Valley. Man, that area was gorgeous.
