History
The first people to complete the then-known contiguous US 14ers (51 CO, 12 CA? & 1 WA?) were father and son Carl and Bob Melzer in 1939 (1). The third person & first woman to complete the then-known contiguous US 14ers (52 CO, 14 CA & 1 WA) was Virginia Nolan on July 19, 1953 (2-4). The speed record for climbing the then-recognized contiguous US 14ers (54 CO, 13 CA? & 1 WA?) was done by George, Flint, Quade, Cody & Tyle Smith in 48 days in 1974 (5,6). Any new speed records for the contiguous US 14ers will need to include all of the 67 peaks listed below.
