The Definition of Prominence

Prominence is defined as the elevation of a summit relative to the landscape surrounding it. In particularly it is the relation between a summit and the highest saddle between said summit and any higher terrain. Prominence can also be described as the difference in elevation between the summit and the lowest elevation contour line surrounding it that surround no higher summit.

Addition

Sam, Boulder Peak, number 100 on your list, is on SummitPost. http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/219118/Boulder-Peaks.html Also I noticed you have added an "A" and "B" to some of the mountains. What is the significance? Mike

Re: Addition

Mike, the Boulder Peak link has been added. I grabbed this info from elsewhere and it's been some time since I did so my memory may not serve me perfectly, but I believe the A and B are simply added when there are multiple peaks in the state with the same name.

Red Mtn 9411

The Red Mtn that is linked on this page is not the Red Mtn 9411 which is on the prominence list. It appears that the linked Red Mtn is 10070 and it is a subpeak of Table Mtn. FWIW.

Re: Red Mtn 9411

Eric, I removed the Red Mountain link from the prominence list, thanks for alerting me to the discrepancy.

Children

Children refers to the set of objects that logically fall under a given object. For example, the Aconcagua mountain page is a child of the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits.' The Aconcagua mountain itself has many routes, photos, and trip reports as children.
