Lower Grapevine Canyon

Things aren't going to tic their selves off the list, so i headed down to the Newberry Mountains in the southern terminus of Lake Mead NRA to poke around in lower Grapevine Canyon. Unlike its well known upper half, no petroglyphs here. Also unlike its well known upper half, there are some sustained, high walled narrows. I started first from the trailhead parking along X.mas Tree Pass Road and headed down canyon. Lots of brush and evidence of a past burn. The canyon soon began to constrict and walls became higher, but it stayed pretty "v" shaped up to the confluence with Sacatone Wash. A couple falls needing ropes to tackle were bypassed, until a spot not far below the confluence with Sacatone Wash

where bypassing seemed much more work than it was worth, given the steep and fractured nature the canyon had taken on. So I regressed, heading up Sacatone Wash back to the road, climbing a short section of falls. Once back at the truck I headed down to the lower Grapevine Canyon trailhead, which starts at the end of Lower Grapevine Canyon Road. There is a short boulder upclimb right off the bat, then lots of fun scrambling and hiking up to where I turned around from the top.

The lower canyon is filled, again, with brush. But the sustained narrows contain numerous pools and a couple fun scrambles. After running out of "ooh's" and "ahh's", I returned from whence I had began. Fun over.
