Overview

Trail Mountain guards the southern part of Three Creeks Valley in the Southern Pahvant Mountains. There is no official trail to the summit much like most of the neighboring peaks in these portion of the mountain range. It offers great views of the Tushar Mountains to the south and the volcanic cones that comprise much of the Southern Pahvant Mountains. There are 2 peaks, but the northern one is higher by about 40 feet or so.

Getting There

From Richfield, drive west on I-70 to Exit 7, which is the western intersection of I-70 and Clear Creek Canyon Road (28.8 miles). Turn right (East) and drive 1.2 miles. Turn left onto FR106/Pavant Corn Creek Road. Drive 2.1 miles to just past the second cattle guard encountered on the dirt road. Practice caution on this road, which can get incredibly slick and sticky after a rain.

Route

From the parked vehicle, walk directly West, taking the path of least resistance. It is possible to stick to the North summit or tag the South summit as well in one loop.

North Summit Only

Round-trip Distance: 1.17 miles

Elevation Gain: 616 feet

Loop

Round-trip Distance: 1.4 miles

Elevation Gain: 702 feet

Red Tape

The peak is in the Fishlake National Forest. Practice Leave No Trace ethics as best as you can.

When to Climb

Year-round is possible though snow travel would be required for an additional 5 or so miles to get to the peak in winter. Spring through fall are the best times.

Camping

There are many primitive sites throughout this mountain range. Castle Rock Campground south of Fremont Indian State Park is one of the closest developed campgrounds.

Direction snafu

If you are starting from FR106 you need to walk east, not west.
